December 1972, Montreux, Lake Geneva

The day before Deep Purple started recording their next album in the Casino in Montreux, one of the locations of the Montreux Jazz Festival, a stupid man with a flaregun ran into a Frank Zappa concert in this casino and burned the place to the ground. The smoke of the burning house drifted over the water of Lake Geneva. Deep Purple had to find another place to record the album. They ended up in the Grand Hotel, which was closed for renovation that winter. The heating was switched off, it was empty, cold and bare. But they made a place to sweat, the drum kit in a hallway alcove, framed with bed mattresses for better sound. Ian Gillan, the singer, wrote his feelings about the fire and the whole situation on a napkin, the band started to record the basic, instrumental track of a song that later turned out to be a 10plus out of 10 master piece of rock music: Smoke on the Water. Just before the end of the first take, the police came. Neighbors had complained about the loudness of this hard rock music, they angrily shouted, maybe some dogs barked also. The roadies of Deep Purple just managed to keep the doors closed until the end of the recording. What a luck!!! Otherwise maybe, this masterpiece of rock might never have been finished.

August 2016, Moscow

Jeny and Alex have been looking for a location for a video shooting. They ended up in a new garage, just opened, some handymen working in it on ladders. The garage was empty, cold and bare. Jeny was looking for a place to sweat, having a bast mat and a bag with toys and oil with her. Jeny and Alex started the shooting of the video that later turned out to be a, maybe “the”, 10plus out of 10 master piece of hot erotic and aesthetic movies. Just when reaching the climax, there was a clicking noise behind her. She stopped for a second – but, what a luck!!! She could finish her action. Otherwise maybe, this masterpiece of erotic movies might never have been finished.

An ever growing tension: from beginning to climax

The first scenes: “looking for a place to sweat”. Jeny, in a very short black dress, having two bags in her hand, is looking for a place where she can start her action. She is on one of the floors of a garage, some handyman on ladders are disturbing her. She uses the stairwell to go to another floor, where she can unfold her bast mat.

The action: the dress sliding higher and higher, the first fingering, the oiling when being naked, the dildo and – the climax – two hands gliding on or fingers in Jeny’s pussy. A smooth and aesthetic scene, due to the oil, the movements are really more gliding (the highest level of arousal for me as a viewer) than rubbing. A short after-climax calm down, then it is mark 14:44. We will come back later to this mark again.

This video is a masterpiece in every aspect, it should not be reduced to this masturbation scene (which is in fact one of the hottest but still aesthetic I have ever seen). We will skip some minor details first, describing the 10 out of 10 version of this video, and we will add the “plus” afterwards. Maybe the whole thing is about a slowly growing tension. The location: “It was empty, cold and bare”, and this seems to be a perfect location for Jeny, such a perfect beauty with some hot action in such a cold atmosphere. And the place of action: only a simple bast mat. The music: a composition by Peter Gundry, played only with harp, flute, clarinet and violin, no bass, no drums, but the drum beat is added by … The sound mix: It is perfect how the clacking of the high heels in Jeny’s opening walk, “looking for a place to sweat”, is adding some kind of drum beat to the music, and it sends a shiver down the spine of the viewer. And the music level is adjusted, not only by on / off, but in steps louder or softer adjusted to the “hotness” of Jeny’s action. When the dildo went in, the music stopped completely. The camera: camera angles, changing between wide angle and close-ups (one can even see the goosebumps Jeny has), the smooth camera movements around Jeny’s body by a glidecam are up to perfection. That is the highest level when you are working with only one cameraman (Alex)! The lighting: on this parking lot, Alex and Jeny worked with a spotlight and an umbrella, and the light reflections on Jeny’s oiled body are outstanding! It can be seen during oiling, in the masturbation scene, but also on Jeny’s final walk.

Mark 14:44: From here on, the viewer has two choices, since there are two different versions of the “New Garage” video: Alex’ original version, if the viewer could stand the heat of Jeny’s climax, or version 2, if the viewer couldn’t. We will compare both versions below. We will first have a look at the “plus” aspect of this 10plus out of 10 masterpiece.

The plus in the 10plus out of 10 movie

What we have skipped so far, is the extra-kick that in this video: we will call it “semi-public”. When “looking for a place to sweat”, Jeny has her first try on one floor of the garage where some handymen are working, one can hear the clattering of ladders. Jeny has to hide behind one pillar of the parking lot. She has no chance to do what she had in mind. Jeny has to step down the stairway to a floor without workers to be seen, and without public to be seen … but from time to time, Jeny (and the viewer) can HEAR the danger: barking dogs, a shout behind her when she just got naked (for one second, she seemed to be uncertain what to do), the clapping of the metallic doors, traffic noise, and – directly – after the climax, a “click” behind Jeny (she is stopping for a second again). This “you can hear the danger” and “Jeny could be forced to stop the action every second” adds this “plus” to the 10 out of 10 video. But the video would have been a masterpiece even when handymen, slamming doors, shouts have been missing! When I saw “New Garage” for the first time, I knew that my former highlight in erotic masterpieces, The Last Metro by Tinto Brass (a staged shooting in an empty metro station), was surpassed by your “New Garage” by miles. Chapeau for this!!!

From climax to the end: Two different versions

We go back to mark 14:44, just after the climax of the masturbation scene. From here on, you have the choice to watch two different versions, the original one by Alex (August 2016) or a re-edited one by another editor (February 2017). When a new editor tries to re-edit a 10plus out of 10 masterpiece, he can only lose. But Version 2 of “New Garage” is of similar perfection as Alex’ original version, it is only the viewers mood that can decide which version fits better in which situation. Situation 1: The viewer is able to stand Jeny’s heat between mark 9:40 and 14:44, then Alex’ version is better. It is clearly structured, the caressing of Jeny’s body, first standing, then kneeing, bending over, the glidecam surrounding her body, her final walk naked, the camera again surrounding her, shots from above, “upskirt” shots without skirt, even upside down shots, when Jeny is arriving at the bast mat again. The sound mix concentrates on the electronic music with vocals, no clacking of the high heels can be heard. It’s perfectly fitting to this “calm-down phase”.

Situation 2: The viewer is NOT able to stand the heat. Then version 2 is better for him. You can see such a mood of a viewer at the end of one of Jeny’s videos as of 2022, called “The storm”. Jeny and Alex have a third passenger in their car, a stranger. He is watching how Jeny is masturbating on the backseat up to the climax, then he steps out of the car and SHOUTED “YYYEEESSSS” – instead of whispering “yes”. To support this viewer’s mood one needs loud rock music, a lot of bass and drums, drum breaks, frequent cuts, mixing of scenes, no clear structure … so one needs the style of a music video. The viewer is – totally exhausted – hanging on his sofa desperately trying to catch some scenes of this last naked walk. Fantastic in Version 2 is the use of the drum beat to indicate scene cuts, and the use of two drum breaks: in one of the drum breaks the image is beginning to “shiver” (when showing a close-up of Jeny caressing her pussy), in the second of the drum breaks there are milliseconds of flashbacks to the masturbation scene. A great idea! Chapeau to the second editor, it was a pleasure to watch!

The penalty shootout: if there can only be one winner

When “Some on the Water” was first released as a single, the A-side was the studio (= Grand Hotel) version recorded in Montreux, the B-side was a live version recorded in Japan. When Smoke on the Water was played in a specific hit parade in German radio for the first time, by accident the radio DJ used the B-side. In the following weeks, he once played the A-side instead – and afterwards hundreds of radio listeners complained: they wanted to hear the first version played, this quite specific live version, recorded in Osaka on August, 15^th, 1972. They wanted to hear a specific improvisation during the famous starting guitar riff, only presented at this evening in Japan. They wanted to hear that version that they heard first.

When I can only chose one of the two versions of the “New Garage” video to take with me to a desert island, I will take the original version – simply because it was the first version I saw, and the impression of this first viewing was an extremely exciting, arousing, deep and long-lasting one: my favorite extremely hot and at the same time aesthetic erotic short movie of all time.
